INFORMATION ON LOCAL AREAS OF NATURAL AND/OR SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE

THE WILFRID BOG:

Located near Wilfrid, on Durham Regional road 12, due West of Cannington. The Wilfrid Bog is the last remaining spruce bog in Ontario south of the Canadian Shield, and a home to many rare plants (mainly orchids). It is also a home to species of rare animals, primarily birds.

The Bog itself was formed as a result of poor drainage in an area surrounded by drumlins that caused the water to pool and create the bog, which has huge amounts of spruce trees growing in it.  A portion of the Wilfrid Bog has been excavated for peat by a local firm; Pefferlaw Peat.
