ESL Course Descriptions
English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL classes are offered throughout Durham Region, at
a variety of levels and locations for all ESL students.
Students will be placed in classes according to their
Canadian Language Benchmark levels.
Test of English as a Foreign Language Preparation
Class (TOEFL) and Test of Written English (TWE)
This course helps learners develop the necessary skills
to achieve an acceptable score on the TOEFL test and teaches
learners how to write a well-developed 200-300-word essay
on a general topic. Students must purchase a specific
text book which will be available from the teacher. The
cost of the text and CD is approximately $65.00.
English for Visitors to Canada
Visitors to Canada may attend ESL classes for a maximum
of 24 weeks without a student authorization. Visitors
attending classes for more than 24 weeks must obtain a
student authorization from their home country before coming
to Canada. Visitors to Canada must pay $6.00 per instructional
hour for the ESL classes. Visitors are placed in existing
ESL classes.
Citizenship Preparation Classes
These classes prepare adults for the Canadian citizenship
examination by focusing on such topics as Canada's history,
geography and government. Classes are held Tuesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm in 4 week sessions. For information regarding the next start date please contact 905-440-4489.
