How long may a visitor to Canada attend English as a Second Language classes?

Adult visitors to Canada may attend ESL classes for up to 24 weeks, without obtaining a student authorization.

May a visitor to Canada attend ESL classes for longer than six months?

Adult visitors to Canada who wish to attend classes for longer than 24 weeks must apply for and obtain a student authorization prior to coming to Canada. It is not possible to change your status from visitor to student while within Canada.

How do I register for ESL Classes?

Adults who wish to register for ESL classes should contact the ESL Coordinator at Durham Continuing Education to arrange for full payment in advance and for the necessary acceptance letter from The Durham District School Board. This information is needed by the Embassy in your home country in order to consider and process your application for a student authorization.

What types of ESL classes do you offer?

We offer a variety of classes - part-time in the morning, part-time in the afternoon, part-time in the evening, full time during the day - and a variety of specialized courses such as TOEFL preparation and Citizenship Preparation. Visitors to Canada will be placed in existing classes with other second language students who have made Canada their home.

What fees must I pay to attend classes?

Visitors to Canada must pay $6.00 per hour to attend classes.

When do ESL classes begin?

Visitors to Canada may begin ESL classes at any time during the year, provided that classes at the appropriate level for the student are being offered at that time and that there are seats still available. Our school year runs from September to June with the regular school holidays in December and March.

What happens if I am not able to get a student visa after I have paid my fees?

Your fees will be refunded.
