Case Study of Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens Ltd.

Port Perry Ont.

Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens (MJOK) was established in Port Perry in 1974. Mr Ken Jackson started a business beside the present site of MJOK in the early 60's making the best butter tarts in Ontario under the name Flamingo Pastries. The name, Mother Jackson's came from the original owners, the Jackson family, and the logo is a picture of Mr. Jackson's mother. The reason why the owners (the Jackson Family) chose this area instead of a more populated area such as Oshawa or Whitby is because they were residents of Port Perry. They were able to get raw materials to the plant and they were able to establish a market for these products, and then sold them successfully. The earliest products made here by Mother Jackson's were meat pies. After the Jackson family started MJOK they sold the Flamingo butter tarts to the Vachon company, who moved production to Aurora. Presently Tech-Star Plastics occupies the original site. The Mother Jackson's company built a new factory next door to the old one and started to produce meat pies and other pastries. The company's present owner is the Scheider Corporation.

Mother Jackson's Production Line

MJOK manufactures many different frozen food products, but they do not use their own name on the product. In the Industry, MJOK is considered a Co-Packer. This means that they are subcontracted by other companies to make their products. Some of the companies are Schneider, Pillsbury, Maple Leaf, Shopsys, and Marks and Spencer. MJOK only puts their name on commercial products which are used by restaurants and cafeterias. When it is in full production, there are 3 plants in the same factory running on a 2-shift schedule and a sanitation crew that comes in every night and cleans everything. There are 150 employees who work at MJOK, making such products as meat pies, shepherds pie, sausage rolls, quiche, hors d'oeuvre, tarts, and tart shells (Tenderflake). The raw materials come from many different sources, all over Canada and the USA.

Mother Jackson's Oven

The time of year between September and December is the busiest for MJOK, because they make a lot of specialty items for the holiday season. The plants can make up to 5 million kilos of meat products per year. The frozen products are then shipped daily to warehouses across Canada and the U.S. for distribution to retail stores across Canada and the USA. "Free Trade" with the United States and Mexico has had a positive affect on the company because it has made it easier to ship products south into these areas. In the summer of 1990 the building underwent a $7 million expansion including 2 new plants. There is no future development plans for the company at this time.

Mother Jackson's Packaging

Mother Jackson's contributes a lot to the economy of Port Perry and Scugog Township. They are good corporate citizens, sponsoring our local hockey team, the MOJACKS, as well as many other worthy causes.
