Recreation In Scugog Township
Scugog Township has often been referred to as providing the best variety of recreational activities in the Region of Durham.
Celebrate summer on Lake Scugog boating, canoeing, water skiing, wind surfing, or swimming and enjoy some of the best fishing in southern Ontario.
Anglers fish for large mouth bass, muskie, perch and pickerel. Around Lake Scugog's shores are several excellent marinas, offering a full range of services. Many offer boat rentals for pleasure cruises or fishing trips. Public launching facilities are available in Port Perry, Caesarea and at the north end of Scugog Island.
The warm sandy beach at the lakefront in Port Perry is a popular spot in the summer with its children's playground or nearby in Birdseye Park, there is a swimming pool, which provides swimming lessons and recreational swimming supervised by lifeguards.
The beautiful green grass of Port Perry's lakefront Palmer Park provide a perfect setting for family picnics and walks along the picturesque shoreline. Also along Port Perry's busy lakefront are two softball diamonds and tennis courts, which accommodate both league and recreational play.
For a game of golf, try playing in one of the many golf courses or even practice up at the nearest driving range. Or, why not have take the whole family mini-putting!
Outdoor enthusiasts will find a world of possibilities in Scugog - the area has numerous trails for everyone from families to seasoned hikers and cyclists. Trails and footpaths along the marshes and lakeshore offer hikers a chance to get close to nature. Or you may choose to paddle down one of our many marshes and explore the bird watcher's paradise known as the Nonquon Wildlife Preserve. In the spring why not join up in the annual Canoe the Nonquon, whether it's a friendly trip for the lovely view or to race competitively; the race is for anyone.
In the winter there are a lot of possible trails for snowmobilers, and snowshoers. And with the snow, comes ice, and ice fishing , and skating at the Open Air Ice Palace on Lake Scugog during January and February. The municipality owns two artificial ice arenas, one in Port Perry and the other in Blackstock.
Ice fishing has become a major sport in Scugog with as many as 800 fish huts registered for use during the winter. Excellent catches of pickerel were recorded even though the season was shortened this past winter.
Snowmobiling has long been a popular winter sport throughout Ontario and two active clubs in Scugog have developed many miles of groomed trails. For those who like more open spaces, Lake Scugog provides an excellent surface for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, motorcycle racing, para sailing, skating or just walking, once it is safely frozen.
And if downhill skiing is of interest, there are two public ski clubs offering excellent facilities just a short drive east of Port Perry. The clubs offer night skiing, chair lifts, snowboard slopes and cross country trails-Lakeridge and Dagmar ski hills and others for cross country.
A wide range of organized sporting activities such as hockey, soccer, softball, hardball, figure skating, ringette and karate are available for area youngsters. Other sporting facilities include a curling club and lawn bowling club.
